We know that children learn about the world through their five senses. The Sensorial materials are tools for developing the human senses to their full potential. It is during this Sensitive Period that the child can create perfect abstractions such as perfect pitch or the ability to carry colors. All humans have the potential to create perfect abstractions in the early years of life; this area assists in that development.
Children who are able to awaken and refine all their senses are better able to classify and bring order to the unlimited number or impressions they are receiving from the world every day. The children explore shape, size, textures, smell, sounds, color and taste. By

isolating the quality being explored, the material allows the children to grasp concrete concepts and then apply them to their environment. They classify, weigh, match, grade and discuss materials they can see hear, taste, smell, and touch. Sensorial materials help children distinguish, categorize, and relate new information to what they already know.
The Sensorial Area provides a variety of sensorial experiences and the corresponding vocabulary, providing children with “keys” to all other areas of learning. Sensorial work lays the foundation for precision learning such as Geometry, Music, and Algebra.
Sensorial
“To be able to distinguish, classify, and catalogue external things on the basis of a secure order already established in the mind. This is at once intelligence and culture.”
―Maria Montessori
