The Language activities in The Montessori House provide children with rich and precise language. Children in this age group have a Sensitive Period for language the entire time they are in the school. The Montessori language activities work with the Sensitive Period allowing the children to experience optimal language development.

The children progress from spoken to written language while in the school. The first emphasis is on spoken language. The children experience language through oral language activities such as conversations, stories, poetry, and vocabulary building. Written language is introduced with sandpaper letters and progresses to

the movable alphabet. After these sensorial experiences, students “explode” into spontaneous reading and writing.

Language is woven into all areas of the environment, and is an area of development that the children work on every day they are in The Montessori House. The Language activities assist the children’s creations of knowledge, organization of thought, confidence, and the ability to express and use their minds.
